Abstract:
; Rhythm is an essential element in slam, a form of oral poetry produced during public per-formances. This article categorizes the phonostyles, or vocal styles, present in a corpus of twelve French slams. Four distinct styles can be identified from the verbal and prosodic characteristics used by slammers: spoken, poetic, stressed, and chanted. Each style is the product of a combination of verbal elements (rhyme, alliteration, versification) and prosodic elements (flow, tempo, scansion, pause) and each slam is characterized by a dominant phonostyle. The study also analyzes the different effects of meaning produced by these phonostyles.
